Artist Statement
The world, to me, is becoming a more and more terrifying place, especially for women. My fellow female friends and I often feel unsafe traveling alone, at night, or even just existing in our day-to-day lives. My photographs depict scenes from both mine and my friends’ personal experiences in which we have felt unsafe or when our voices have been silenced. These photos particularly call out the double standards between male and female college students where women are on constant alert for their safety. At the same time, men are usually more casual about their safety. In these photographs, I call out these double standards by using objects to represent women's constant fears and silencing. I create these photographs so that others who have yet to experience those fears can attempt to have empathy with others who have, and it will encourage people to make a positive change against such negative events.
